What can be manufactured in Mexico? Industries, products, and capabilities

An overview of what Mexican manufacturers make, from machined parts and molded plastics to electronics, apparel, and spirits, and where the supply base is thinner.

Mexico makes far more than cars. Its manufacturers produce precision metal parts, medical devices, electronics, appliances, apparel, furniture, packaging, cosmetics, and spirits, among much else. This guide is an overview by industry, with links to the manufacturers in each category.

Metal parts and fabrication

Metalworking is one of Mexico's deepest supply bases. CNC machining shops range from small precision job shops to large plants serving automotive and aerospace programs. Stamping, sheet metal fabrication, welding, casting, forging, and finishing (plating, anodizing, powder coating, heat treating) are all widely available, with the heaviest concentration in Nuevo León, Coahuila, the Bajío, and Mexico City.

Typical products: machined components, brackets, enclosures, frames, castings, springs, fasteners, welded assemblies.

Plastics and rubber

Injection molders serve automotive, appliance, medical, packaging, and consumer goods customers, many with in-house mold making. Extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, and rubber and silicone molding are also well established.

Typical products: enclosures and housings, automotive interior parts, containers and closures, seals and gaskets, profiles and tubing.

Electronics and electrical

Mexico is a major producer of electronics for the North American market, including contract electronics assembly (PCB assembly and box build), wire harnesses and cable assemblies, electrical equipment, and appliances. Baja California, Chihuahua, Jalisco, and Tamaulipas are major centers.

Typical products: circuit board assemblies, wire harnesses, power and control equipment, appliances, lighting.

Automotive and aerospace

Automotive is Mexico's largest manufacturing sector, with vehicle assembly plants supported by thousands of component suppliers. Aerospace is smaller but significant, concentrated in Querétaro, Baja California, Chihuahua, Sonora, and Nuevo León.

Typical products: stamped and machined components, interior and electrical parts, aerospace structures, machined aerospace parts, assemblies.

Medical devices

Medical device production is concentrated in Baja California, especially Tijuana, along with Chihuahua and other states. Plants often operate under ISO 13485 and supply U.S. medical companies.

Typical products: disposable devices, surgical instruments, components, molded medical parts.

Apparel, textiles, and footwear

Cut-and-sew operations produce uniforms, workwear, denim, and fashion garments, with large bases in Puebla, Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Mexico City. León, Guanajuato is the center of footwear and leather goods.

Typical products: uniforms, workwear, jeans, knitwear, boots and shoes, leather goods.

Furniture, packaging, and printing

Furniture makers work in wood, metal, and upholstery for residential and commercial markets. Packaging manufacturers produce corrugated boxes, folding cartons, flexible packaging, and plastic containers, and commercial printers handle labels and printed materials.

Chemicals, cosmetics, food, and beverages

Contract manufacturers formulate and fill cosmetics, personal care, and cleaning products. Food co-packers produce shelf-stable products such as sauces, snacks, and confectionery, and Mexico's distilleries produce tequila and mezcal, including private label for U.S. brands.

Where the supply base is thinner

Mexico is not the answer for everything. The supply base is thinner for:

  • Semiconductors and many electronic components, which are mostly imported even when final assembly happens in Mexico
  • Some consumer products whose component supply chains are concentrated in Asia
  • Very labor-intensive, very low-cost goods, where other countries' labor costs are lower
  • Certain specialty materials, which Mexican manufacturers may need to import

For these, a Mexican supplier may still be the right choice for final assembly, but expect some inputs to come from abroad, which affects cost, lead time, and rules of origin.
